WordCamp Philly Celebrates 5th Anniversary

WordCamp Philly 2015 has been announced and this year is shaping up to be the best yet! This will be the fifth WordCamp Philly, which is an amazing milestone! There are still plenty of cities that have never had a WordCamp (looking at you Indianapolis), so I am extremely proud to see our event enter its fifth year.

rocky-wapuu-300x300So what’s the secret to organizing an event that lasts? The community. We have an amazing WordPress Community in the Philadelphia area. We have not one, but two very active Meetup groups focused on WordPress. The Philadelphia WordPress Meetup Group, which I help organize, as well as the Philly ‘burbs WordPress Meetup, which moves around each month to a different area in the Philly burbs. This community has helped us form a solid organizing team as well as an awesome group of Volunteers for the event over the years. Without a strong community WordCamp Philly would not be where it is at today.

We are planning another awesome event this year. Expect plenty of talented speakers presenting on topics for all skills levels, a few fun panels, plenty of food and snacks, and a few surprises! I will also be organizing a Philadelphia walkabout Sunday morning for anyone who has joined my #BenchPress initiative.

WordCamp Philly tickets are now on sale, so be sure to get your ticket while they last. We also have sponsorship packages available if you’d like to help support the event and promote your company to hundreds of local tech enthusiasts.

WordCamp Philly 2015 is going to be the best event yet. I look forward to seeing you all there!

WordCamp Philly is Next Week!

WordCamp Philly 2012 is next weekend! For a third year in a row I am a co-organizer of WordCamp Philly.

This year we have a packed schedule with some amazing speakers. The entire event will be Halloween themed, which you know I love, so I can’t wait to see all the costumes attendees and speakers will be wearing during the event.

We’re working hard to make sure this year’s WordCamp Philly is even better than last year! If you haven’t already registered get your ticket¬†before they sell out. ¬†It’s time for another WordCamp, Illy Philly style!

I Survived WordCamp Philly 2011!

Last weekend was WordCamp Philly 2011, the second WordCamp to be held in the City of Brotherly Love!

I had the pleasure of organizing the event this year with Doug Stewart, Reed Gustow, and Anthony Bubel. The event was a huge success!

Saturday we had an amazing lineup of speakers covering four tracks and a classroom with all sorts of awesome WordPress related topics. Saturday ended with an epic after party at National Mechanics. Sunday we held a Developer Day with more hands on hacking, which is always a fun time!

Overall it was an awesome event and one I am extremely proud to have been a part of. The Philly WordPress Community really stepped up and helped put on an amazing event.

I gave a classroom style presentation titled “Creating Your First WordPress Plugin”. The slides are embedded below:

Be sure to check out the other great presentations on the official WordCamp Philly 2011 SlideShare group.

New House and More!

Its been a crazy month, and I’m a little late writing this post, but I’m excited to say I am once again a homeowner! April and I bought a house in Glenside, Pennsylvania and are absolutely in love with it!

Buying this house brought back a lot of memories of my old house in Indiana. I loved being a homeowner and couldn’t wait to buy another house.

Glenside is a great little town just north of Philadelphia. It has a small town feel, but is only 30 minutes from downtown Philly. The new house has an amazing kitchen, all new appliances, plenty of room for the entire zoo, and a monstrous backyard.

We closed on the new house on April 1st. Shortly after arriving at our new home that same day I got down on one knee and proposed to April (and she said yes)! She is the love of my life and I wanted the house to be ours from day one.

Its been a wild month and we can’t wait to finish moving into our new place!

WordCamp Philly 2010 Was A Huge Success!

WordCamp Philly 2010, the inaugural Philadelphia WordCamp, was last Saturday and was a huge success! I was lucky enough to be one of the organizers, along with Anthony Bubel and Marilyn Moran, and couldn’t be happier with how the event turned out.

We had an amazing lineup of speakers and topics for the event. We also had some awesome sponsors step up and help making this event a great success.

The event was held at Alter Hall in the Fox School of Business building. This building was absolutely amazing! The technology in each room was superb and made for a flawless day of presentations, slides, and even the official WordCamp Philly soundtrack!

The entire WebDevStudios crew almost attended (we were missing Scotty B), but the rest of the team was in attendence and myself, Brian Messenlehner, Chris Cochran, and Ronald Huereca all gave presentations.

There were also many of my WordPress friends in attendance including Ptah Dundar, Hal Stern, Michael Torbert, Steve Mortiboy, Jane Wells, Andrew Nacin, Doug Stewart, Jayvie Canono, Ryan Duff, Ted Mann, and many others I’m sure I am forgetting.

Best Wings in Philadelphia?

Last night April and I decided to try the winner of the “Best Wings in Philly” as awarded by Philadelphia Magazine.

Cinnamon Wings

The winning wings were from Teresa’s Next Door Bar in Wayne, PA. When I heard the wings were cinnamon I was a bit skeptical, but being the best wings in Philly I had to try them.

The first thing I noticed is the wings are whole wings. So even though the serving is only 5 whole wings, it’s actually 10 traditional wings. When the waitress brought the wings we immediately smelt the warm cinnamon aroma. Even the guy sitting next to us asked if they were cinnamon flavored.

The wings were extremely delicious! The meat was juicy and cooked perfectly. The cinnamon was better than I expected, but I still felt like I was missing out on my normal hot wings.

Overall the wings at Teresa’s Next Door Bar were really good and I would recommend them to anybody. Now I need to go back and try the hot wings!
