Professional WordPress Second Edition is Coming!

It’s official,Professional WordPress Second Edition is in the works! I’m really excited to update this book, as it’s such a great resource for WordPress design and development. The original Professional WordPress is one of the HIGHEST rated WordPress design and development books on the market, and we plan on making the Second Edition even better!

The original writing team is back, with a slight twist. This version of the book will be written by David Damstra and myself. Hal Stern will serve as our Technical Editor this time around. As with the last book, Professional WordPress takes a more advanced look at WordPress. From dissecting core code, breaking down functions and classes, to exploring WordPress APIs in depth, this book will help you take your WordPress design and development skills to the next level!

The original book was written for WordPress 2.9 and is over two years old now. Surprisingly the book actually holds up pretty well in most areas. The new book will be written around WordPress 3.5 (we’re very forward thinking) and include all of the new features and enhancements that have been released over the past two years. I’m really excited for some of the brand new chapters we’re writing, including chapters dedicated to Multisite and Custom Post Types and Taxonomies. We will even have an entire chapter dedicated to working with WordPress locally!

New Book: Professional WordPress Plugin Development!

I couldn’t be more excited to announce a new book I’m co-authoring: Professional WordPress Plugin Development!

WROX logoThis book will continue the Professional WordPress series with a focus on plugin development in WordPress. This alone is exciting news, but of course I’m not writing this book on my own. I’ve brought in two of the best known WordPress developers in the business: Ozh Richard and Justin Tadlock! Anyone who works with WordPress will be very familiar with these two guys. They both have a huge reputation for writing some of the most detailed, easy to understand, and extremely knowledgeable tutorials out there for plugin and WordPress development.

The excitement doesn’t stop there! We’ve also brought in two great Technical Editors for our new book. The first is Andrew Nacin. Anyone who follows the core development of WordPress will be very familiar with Andrew. Andrew is one of the most active core contributors to the WordPress project and his endless knowledge of the internals of WordPress are sure to help take our book to the next level. The second Tech Editor is Doug Vann. Doug is known for his expertise and knowledge in the open source CMS world. Doug will approach this book as a CMS user, thinking outside the box of a normal developer.

This book will be jam packed with plugin knowledge from beginner topics like creating your first plugin, security, and settings, to more advanced topics like JavaScript and AJAX, Cron, and the mysterious Rewrite API. This book will have something for everyone looking to learn or expand their knowledge on building professional plugins in WordPress.

You can following our process during the writing of this book using the hash tag #plugindevbook on Twitter. The book is currently planned for a March 2011 release date.

SitePoint Podcast Interview for Professional WordPress

Last week Hal Stern, David Damstra, and myself had the privilege of being interviewed on the SitePoint Podcast for our new book Professional WordPress!SitePoint Logo

I had a great time discussing our book with hosts Patrick O’Keefe and Stephan Segraves. We covered many different topics including how the book came to be, what separates our book from the rest, and how our book is a solid compliment to the Codex. We also had a great discussion about the difference between a WordPress Theme and a Theme Framework, which I think a lot of people are still a little confused by.

Professional WordPress Book CoverIt’s a little strange being on the other side of the interview table, but I’m starting to get use to it. Promoting a book is a lot of work, but in the end the payoff is well worth it. If you haven’t had a chance to order this book what are you waiting for? Order a copy today and support your favorite WordPress developers!

Also be sure to subscribe to the SitePoint Podcast, which I’m a regular co-host on, if you haven’t already! We discuss the latest news and happenings in the world of web development and design.

The entire process was quite a learning experience since I had never written a book before. Luckily Wiley/WROX has an amazingly talented staff that helped guide us during this book writing journey. Hal and David were also great co-authors to work with during the process.
