#BenchPress at WordCamp Philly

WordCamp Philly is this weekend and once again I am co-organizing the event!  As part of my new #BenchPress initiative, I am planning an event for Sunday morning to get everyone involved in a fun activity.

The WordCamp Philly #BenchPress plan is to meet at 11:30am in front of the Art Museum steps (Rocky steps / 2600 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy, Philadelphia, PA 19130).  We’ll kick off the workout by running up the steps just like Rocky did!  Next we’ll have a nice walk along Schuylkill River Trail and continue all the way to The University of the Sciences for Contributor Day.  The walk will be approximately 3 miles and we’ll take a nice leisurely pace as we see the beautiful sites in the Philadelphia area.  Below is a map of our route (blue trail):

This event is open to everyone who wants to spend some time with other WordCampers and get a little exercise in!  If you are interested in joining us, please join the #BenchPress group on Facebook.  We’ll coordinate more info and day of meet-up in the group.  Let’s get moving #BenchPress!

WordCamp Philly Celebrates 5th Anniversary

WordCamp Philly 2015 has been announced and this year is shaping up to be the best yet! This will be the fifth WordCamp Philly, which is an amazing milestone! There are still plenty of cities that have never had a WordCamp (looking at you Indianapolis), so I am extremely proud to see our event enter its fifth year.

rocky-wapuu-300x300So what’s the secret to organizing an event that lasts? The community. We have an amazing WordPress Community in the Philadelphia area. We have not one, but two very active Meetup groups focused on WordPress. The Philadelphia WordPress Meetup Group, which I help organize, as well as the Philly ‘burbs WordPress Meetup, which moves around each month to a different area in the Philly burbs. This community has helped us form a solid organizing team as well as an awesome group of Volunteers for the event over the years. Without a strong community WordCamp Philly would not be where it is at today.

We are planning another awesome event this year. Expect plenty of talented speakers presenting on topics for all skills levels, a few fun panels, plenty of food and snacks, and a few surprises! I will also be organizing a Philadelphia walkabout Sunday morning for anyone who has joined my #BenchPress initiative.

WordCamp Philly tickets are now on sale, so be sure to get your ticket while they last. We also have sponsorship packages available if you’d like to help support the event and promote your company to hundreds of local tech enthusiasts.

WordCamp Philly 2015 is going to be the best event yet. I look forward to seeing you all there!

WordCamp London 2015

Next weekend I will be attending and speaking at WordCamp London 2015! This will be my third WordCamp outside of the US, with the first two being WordCamp Montreal 2009 and WordCamp Europe 2013.

wordcamp-london-2015-logoI am speaking on Sunday at 12:15pm in the Henry Thomas Room. My presentation is on Hiring Employee Number One: From Freelancer to Agency. I first gave this presentation at PrestigeConf last month and am very excited to present this to the London crowd. It’s a fun and informative presentation on lessons learned as we started and grew WebDevStudios over the years.

My wife and I are staying in the London area for a week to explore the city, art, music, food, and everything London has to offer! My last trip to London I was a teenager, and to be honest didn’t really appreciate the history a country like England has to offer. I’m excited to learn more about the history of the city and country. I am also very excited to eat yummy English food!

If you are attending WordCamp London, make sure to track me down and say hi! I’m looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones at WordCamp London next weekend!

WordCamp Indy Needs to Happen

If you aren’t familiar with a WordCamp, it’s defined as “an informal, community-organized events that are put together by WordPress users”. WordCamps are amazing events for all types of WordPress users. Whether you’re an avid blogger, or advanced developer, a good WordCamp will have something for you.

Indiana has never had a WordCamp. Being a WordPress fanboy, and born and raised in Indiana, this makes me extremely sad. Most major cities in the United States have had multiple WordCamps at this point, but sadly Indiana hasn’t had a single one. This needs to change.

WordCampIndy.org and the @WordCampIndy Twitter account have been squatted on for years by a company called WatershedStudio. They stated planning for WordCamp Indy was underway back in 2008, but the event never happened. I would really love to see WordCamp Central put some pressure on the owners of the site and Twitter account to hand them over to someone who will actually help organize an event.

The one thing that WordCamp Indy really needs is a leader to step up and take charge. I am willing to support a WordCamp Indy as much as possible. I will sponsor, apply to speak, help volunteer, and promote the event to the entire WordPress Community. The one thing I can’t do is help organize, because that responsibility should fall on locals.

Are you interested in seeing a WordCamp Indy happen? Leave a comment and let’s make WordCamp Indy a reality!

Writing Secure WordPress Code

A few weeks ago I gave a presentation at WordCamp Europe on writing secure WordPress code. The methods I described in my presentation are extremely important when writing code for WordPress. Whether you are a theme designer or a hardcore plugin developer, you should follow all of these security measures to verify your code is as secure as possible. My presentation slides are below:

WordCamp Europe Is Next Week!

Next week I will be attending and speaking at the first ever WordCamp Europe! The event takes place October 5th-7th in Leiden, Netherlands. WordCamp Europe is going to be an amazing event with a insane amount of awesome presentations.

WordCamp Europe 2013 SpeakerI will be presenting on Writing Secure WordPress Code. I’m scheduled to be the last presentation on Saturday at 17:15. I’ll be covering tips and functions available in WordPress that can help you keep your code as secure as possible. Whether you’re a plugin developer or build themes, it’s extremely important to understand how to secure your code from hacks and exploits.

As awesome as this event is going to be, I’m just as excited to see many of my friends at the event. The Attendees list is a who’s who of WordPress awesomeness. I have so many European friends in the WordPress community that will be in attendance so I can’t wait to hang out!

If you’re attending WordCamp Europe make sure you track me down and say hi!

I’m Speaking at WordCamp Miami This Weekend!

wordcamp-miami-speakerThis weekend I will be speaking at sunny WordCamp Miami 2013! My presentation is titled Using WordPress as an Application Framework.

This is a brand new presentation for me so I’m very excited to present on the topic! Over the years we’ve built some really amazing WordPress powered web applications at WebDevStudios. My presentation will cover how to utilize WordPress as an application framework as well examples of web apps powered by WordPress. The goal is to get the audience to think outside the box when using WordPress.

I’ll be joined by Brian, Lisa, and Jay at the event, who are all giving presentations at the three-day event. April will also be attending and helping out as a volunteer. If you are attending WordCamp Miami make sure you track me down and say hi!

I’ve always enjoyed attending WordCamps and tech events. If you’ve never attended a WordCamp I highly recommend it. The amount of knowledge gained in 1-day of WordCamp is unmatched.

My plan is to create a custom section on my site to help track events I’ve attended, presentation slides, and videos if available.

WordCamp Philly is Next Week!

WordCamp Philly 2012 is next weekend! For a third year in a row I am a co-organizer of WordCamp Philly.

This year we have a packed schedule with some amazing speakers. The entire event will be Halloween themed, which you know I love, so I can’t wait to see all the costumes attendees and speakers will be wearing during the event.

We’re working hard to make sure this year’s WordCamp Philly is even better than last year! If you haven’t already registered get your ticket before they sell out.  It’s time for another WordCamp, Illy Philly style!

I’m Speaking at WordCamp San Diego 2012!

This weekend I’m speaking at WordCamp San Diego 2012!  I’ll be giving a presentation on WordPress Multisite.  This is a presentation I’ve wanted to do for some time now so I’m really excited to present it in San Diego.

We do a LOT of WordPress Multisite work at my company WebDevStudios.  I think the Multisite name can be a bit intimidating, so I’m hoping my presentation will remove some of that fear and get people motivated to try it out. I will also be giving away a few copies of my book: Professional WordPress Plugin Development.

If you are attending the event make sure you track me down and buy me a beer! :)
