WordCamp Philly Celebrates 5th Anniversary

WordCamp Philly 2015 has been announced and this year is shaping up to be the best yet! This will be the fifth WordCamp Philly, which is an amazing milestone! There are still plenty of cities that have never had a WordCamp (looking at you Indianapolis), so I am extremely proud to see our event enter its fifth year.

rocky-wapuu-300x300So what’s the secret to organizing an event that lasts? The community. We have an amazing WordPress Community in the Philadelphia area. We have not one, but two very active Meetup groups focused on WordPress. The Philadelphia WordPress Meetup Group, which I help organize, as well as the Philly ‘burbs WordPress Meetup, which moves around each month to a different area in the Philly burbs. This community has helped us form a solid organizing team as well as an awesome group of Volunteers for the event over the years. Without a strong community WordCamp Philly would not be where it is at today.

We are planning another awesome event this year. Expect plenty of talented speakers presenting on topics for all skills levels, a few fun panels, plenty of food and snacks, and a few surprises! I will also be organizing a Philadelphia walkabout Sunday morning for anyone who has joined my #BenchPress initiative.

WordCamp Philly tickets are now on sale, so be sure to get your ticket while they last. We also have sponsorship packages available if you’d like to help support the event and promote your company to hundreds of local tech enthusiasts.

WordCamp Philly 2015 is going to be the best event yet. I look forward to seeing you all there!

The First WordSesh Was a Huge Success!

wordsesh-badge-speakingWordSesh, the first ever 24 hour free live streaming WordPress event, took place just a few short days ago. I had the privilege of helping organize and run the event with Scott Basgaard and Chris Cochran. The event was a huge success that featured an epic list of presenters from the WordPress Community.

Below are a few of the presentations that I enjoyed the most:

DradCast Kickoff Episode

Dre and I hosted a special WordSesh kickoff edition of the DradCast hosted by Scott Basgaard. We had a great time discussing how WordSesh was thought up, the logistics behind organizing an online only event, and some fun WordPress news.

Scoping Projects to Avoid Stress, Headaches & Angry Mobs

Lisa gave a great presentation on scoping projects for clients, which is a topic any entrepreneur can benefit from. She shares her experience with a client and ways she could have made the project run smoother by creating a detailed proposal and spec upfront.

WordPress Plugins, Code, and the Ecosystem in General

Brian and Pippin present on plugins and the ecosystem around them. They both have a wealth of knowledge that all WordPress plugins developers could learn from.

Everything & anything you’ve ever wanted to know about BuddyPress & bbPress

John’s presentation on BuddyPress and bbPress is a fun walkthrough on the history of both projects. John discusses the initial releases, journey to their current state, and also touches on the future of both BuddyPress and bbPress.

The best part of WordSesh is that all presentations are available online! To view any of the amazing videos visit the WordSesh YouTube page. Also be sure to follow @WordSesh on Twitter for updates on future events.

WordSesh proved that an online only WordPress event is something the community not only needs, but absolutely loves. Stay tuned for WordSesh 2!

WordSesh Starts Tonight with the DradCast

wordsesh-badge-speakingWordSesh, a 24-hour live streaming WordPress event, starts tonight with a special edition of the DradCast! The show starts at 8pm EDT ( 0:00 UTC ) and will feature the WordSesh organizer, and my good friend, Scott Basgaard.

This is the first ever online-only WordPress event and I’m very excited to be a part of it. I’d love to see more events like WordSesh in the future and I absolutely think we will. Overall there is very little overhead for an event like this, with the biggest cost being the time it takes to organize.

If you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend (and honestly who doesn’t want to hang out with a bunch of nerds on a Friday?) you need to check out WordSesh. If you can’t make the live event don’t worry, all presentations are being recorded via YouTube so you can watch them back at your leisure.

I will see you tonight!

WordCamp Philly is Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the inaugural WordCamp Philly! I’m co-organizing the event and can’t wait to kick it off!

WordCamp Philly 2010We have an amazing lineup of speakers for the event including Ronald Huereca of WDS giving a presentation on WordPress and Ajax. I’m giving a presentation with Brian Messenlehner, the other co-founder of WDS, on Spooky WordPress: Disturbingly Brilliant Uses of WP.

We have four tracks (two beginner and two advanced) and an unconference room running ad hoc discussions and presentations. We’re giving away some amazing prizes and even have a costume contest (with prizes!) for the after party.

This is going to be an amazing WordCamp, and hopefully the start of an annual tradition in Philly. I’ll be sure to post a recap after the event with pictures.

Professional WordPress Book Signing at Blog World Expo

Next month is Blog World and New Media Expo 2010 in Las Vegas. I’ve just confirmed I’ll be doing a book signing for Professional WordPress at the event!

Pro WP BookWiley will have a booth setup where you can purchase all of their amazing books. I’ll be signing copies of Professional WordPress at the Wiley booth on Saturday, October 16th at 1pm.

I’ll be attending Blog World Expo with Brian and April from WebDevStudios. As many of you know my company redesigned the BlogWorld.com website a few weeks ago using the Genesis theme framework. We are also sponsors of Blog World Expo this year!

It looks to be a great event so if you plan on attending be sure to stop by and say hi!
